The pleasant folk melody of Dheena and the captivating tune of Choo maari open the soundtrack – the former is innately tuneful while the latter has scintillating backgrounds and excellent use of kids’ chorus even though the core tune is simple and hummable. The rest of the four tracks have a surprisingly marked Ilayaraja influence, the Ilayaraja of yore! While the debutant composer himself sounds almost intentionally like the Maestro in the simple, yet resonant Paasa mozhi – despite definitely sounding awkward in places, his Sivakasi rathiye, sung with villag’ish charm by Periya Karuppa Thevar, is a joyous Raja-styled rustic tune, with catchy lyrics! Chinmayi rules over the lovely Avaram poo, in a tune that is beautifully orchestrated with a Raja tinge again. The soundtrack closes with another strong Ilayaraja homage, Maaman engirukkaan – that sporadic violin use, innovatively short interludes – all make up for a lively and enjoyable duet with Harini in amazing form. Director Sasi is known for his music sense and has always toyed with new composers. He gets an excellent, original composer in SS Kumaran who, while consciously opting out of the mod sound race like others, comes up with an elegant score befitting the film’s theme.
