Gum Ho Kahan, Dil Ghabraye and Manzil Ki Ore – I Want To Talk (Taba Chake) – Hindi: For a director like Shoojit Sircar who has more or less been very consistent with a composer like Shantanu Moitra for many of his films (besides guest compositions by others), I was quite surprised to see Taba Chake being the composer here. But he does a great job, with the real, unplugged rock music feel of the two songs that seem to gel well with the film’s poignant theme.
Kanne Kanave – DNA (Sreekanth Hariharan) – Tamil: What? A film by director Nelson Venkatesan (Oru Naal Koothu, Monster, Farhana) doesn’t have music by Justin Prabhakaran? That’s a surprise! But then I realized that there are 5 composers in the film – Sreekanth Hariharan, Sathyaprakash, Sahi Siva, Pravin Saivi, and Anal Akash. Good to see Nelson offering opportunities to more composers, and the first single by Sreekanth Hariharan (sung by him along with Sireesha Bhagavatula) is adequately promising, though this is something I may have guessed as Justin’s music 🙂
Nenjamelaam Kaadhal – Emakku Thozhil Romance (Nivas K Prasanna) – Tamil: The song’s title immediately took me back to Rahman’s superlative song from Aaytha Ezhuthu 🙂 But Nivas’s new song is the polar opposite in every way, including the way Varshini Muralikrishnan delivers the title hook! Nivas’s music gets a more interesting in the interludes, particularly Basanth Muralikrishnan’s outstanding show on the saxophone, with Varshini bringing the roof down with her stupendous singing.
Gandharva Ganam – Rifle Club (Rex Vijayan) – Malayalam: Catchy and glitzy enough, but I was surprised that it reminded me a bit too much of Shankar Ehsaan Loy’s ‘Aaj Ki Raat’ from Don! Well sung by Shweta Mohan and Sooraj Santhosh.
Dhurooha Manthahasame – Sookshmadarshini (Christo Xavier) – Malayalam: Christo builds the song’s tempo brilliantly and lands the pulse-pounding latter portion really well, aided by Ahi Ajayan’s excellent vocals.
Kho Jaun – Adarsh Rao (Indipop): There’s a certain warmth in Adarsh’s composition and singing that made me listen to the song again! The way the song opens and the way the hook (Mila Mujhe Tu Jo) works wonderfully well. The instrumental choices Adarsh makes too accentuate the song’s charm.
Sahiba – Jasleen Royal, ft. Stebin Ben (Indipop): A fantastic melody by Jasleen that offer Stebin Bin a great platform to showcase his vocals yet again. The melody has a Pakistani Coke Studio feel to it, in terms of the sweeping and chorus-laden sound.
Morni – Shiv-Hari, Hiten, ft. Badshah and Sharvi Yadav (Indipop): If the thought of a ‘remix’ of Shiv-Hari’s song from Lamhe horrifies you, please move to the next item in this page (and the next song in the playlist). From my point of view, it is what I anticipated – a punchy dance/rap version of the soulful older song. In a way, when you see the graceful dance movements of Sridevi in the older song’s video and Preity Mukhundhan’s athletically energetic dance movements in the new video, you realize how the times have changed.
Mandahaasa – Sanjith Hegde (Indipop/Kannada): Another excellent song by Sanjith! The guy is consistently good with his compositions besides just his vocals. Here, he effectively mixes English and Kannada to produce a tantalizingly good hiphop number. The music too, particularly in the middle, is very good.
