Zero (Music review), Tamil – Nivas K Prasanna

Anirudh brings a certain vulnerability to Uyire un uyirena‘s gorgeous ballad-style melody that adds a tremendous layer. Nivas lets the tune soak in and keeps the orchestration beautifully complimentary, complete with a hauntingly soft rhythm, and aptly backing strings. Haricharan lifts Veredhuvum nijamae illai to new heights, but it is Nivas’s incredible tune that is the true hero of the song! The melody is instantly endearing, smoothly easing into an uncluttered pop sound. The song’s English version, You Are In My Heart, opens like a tribute to Clapton’s Wonderful Tonight, but proceeds to be an astonishing showcase of Natalie Di Luccio’s vocal prowess, while also accentuating the tune’s Western pop feel. As if to solidify the great choice of singers in the soundtrack, Nivas gets Vijay Prakash and Neeti Mohan for Engae ponaai and once again, the combo works wonders. They bring in the right amount of melancholy to the sweeping tune, while Nivas keeps the backgrounds rich, with a lovely dash of piano. Nivas takes on Indha kaadhal illaiyel himself and does a smashing job singing and more specifically, while composing the spritely soaked-in-love tune. Zero, and not the odd Sethupathy, is the fitting follow-up to Nivas’s debut, Thegidi.
