Oru Naal Koothu (Music review), Tamil – Justin Prabhakaran

Sean Roldan’s pained, strained voice makes a perfect base for the pathos-tinged melody of Adiyae azhagae, well-supported by Padma Latha. It’s Justin’s beautiful tune that stays, though. In Maangalyamae, Justin offers solid fun, with the lines Karky provides and the hilarious mishmash tune he conjures up! Not just that, he has a host of voices and voice modulations from six singers too – thoroughly enjoyable medley! Paatta podunga ji, with its chorus’ish vocals, mix of strings and rhythm, is a lovely throwback to Raja’s 90s music. Justin layers it further with nadaswaram, funny dialogs from radio and lyrics (by Veera), a fantastic second interlude and a amazingly harmonious tune that Karthik leads in his inimitable style! Yaeli yaeli‘s slow and meditative tune brings forth the the lyrics’ searing melancholy wonderfully, in Sathya Prakash and Shweta Mohan’s voices. Justin closes the soundtrack on a superb high with Eppo varuvaaro, a Gopalakrishna Bharathi song. He subverts the song’s convention – what is usually sung in raaga Jonpuri, or occasionally Senchurutti, he opts for what seems like Hamir Kalyani! The result, in Haricharan’s brilliant rendition, is sheer magic! Justin’s past three outings were great, with minor missteps. This one is a flawless winner!
