If you thought Ye sivagami was from some 90s Liyaqat Ali Khan/RK Selvamani film, featuring a guest dance by Prabhu Deva, you may not be alone. Unmaya naan has 3 departments competing for naivety – lyrics, Maya’s vocals and the tune itself. Tippu’s Kaatrinai is middling – rouses more of expectant nostalgia than anything else. Viduthalaikuyil does tug the heartstrings, particularly Raja’s vocals, while Enakkena and Manasoram offer the closest to what Raja is capable of – gratifying melodies soaked in love, but amidst underwhelming arrangements. Ayyan barely attempts to move Raja out of his current, woebegone form*. Ayyan’s soundtrack completely belies Ilayaraja’s current form, if you go by his recent output.
Keywords: Ayyan, Ilayaraja
* Thanks to convincing argument by @sureshs65, I realize my silly, broad assumption while referring to Ilayaraja’s form. So, it is only fair that I rephrase the last line. My opinion about this soundtrack remains, anyway.
