Pookkal pookkum uses the oft-used period film fusion format – the melody seems hurried even beyond its sweetness. Vaama duraiyamma introduces Tamil Nadu to the uninitiated foreigner in an unsurprising tune, while Meghame‘s choice of singers – Vikram, Nasser and MSV – is its sole selling point. Aaruyire is where the composer unleashes his creativity in a haunting, melancholic melody with excellent orchestration, and Kaatrile’s jingoistic fervor is underwhelming, beyond fusing Vande Mataram appropriately. The two instrumental pieces are functionally decent. G V Prakash Kumar doesn’t break new ground for his first period film and merely treads conventionally safe paths.
