Music review: Ethirmarai (Tamil – Murugan Mohan)

Rojappoovin has a rather attention-grabbing, free-flowing structure interspersed with catchy English chorus, but Thodathey, both versions, tread an annoyingly jaded 90s style, quite sadly. Neeya yennai too sounds like Rahman’s leftovers from a decade ago, despite a heartwarming effort by Hariharan on the vocals. Yenna kanduttai has a tune that sounds like Karthikraja’s trademark and has been handled beautifully well by the debutant composer, particularly the backgrounds. Anuradha Sriram’s brother Murugan Mohan makes only a mildly impactful debut – it is definitely not path-breaking, but does have certain nuances that highlight the fact that he may actually be capable of more.
