Music review: Nandhalala (Tamil – Ilayaraja)

Mella oorndhu has an enthralling tune with fittingly sober orchestration. K J Jesudas’ Onnukonnu carries a sedate sound with beautiful lyrics by Mu.Metha, but Raja’s own Thalaattu ketka is indulgently soaked in 80s emotions. Kai veesiā€™s tune, vocals and particularly the backgrounds are spritely and pleasant. The composer joins his off-key grandson in the lively Oru vaandu koottame that is marred by sounds that used to be interesting in the previous decade. Saroja Ammaal singing the Gypsy song, Elilea to herself is one flat, uninteresting experience. Raja manages to scrape through an appealing soundtrack, despite that chronic outdatedness in sound.
