Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na (Abbas Tyrewala)

Jaane Tu…is a celebration of cameos. Besides the leads, who are extremely competent, there are so many interesting cameos that can be branched out into separate plots/ movies themselves. Take for instance the cowboy duo – Arbaaz and Sohail Khan. This one’s a master stroke from Abbas. The fact that these 2 otherwise leading (ok, not that successful!) men agreed to do this utterly corny cameo and the sheer audacity with which Abbas blends them into the plot towards the movie’s end is pure brilliance. Or Prateik Babbar’s brooding honesty in most of what he utters. And of course, those sparkling – albeit clichéd – cameos by Ratna Pathak Shah and Naseeruddin Shah. Another slightly-longer cameo is from the luminous Manjari Phadnis! The shades that Abbas weaves into her character are worth a separate film in itself. As every other review before this has already noted, Jaane Tu… has nothing new – but the devil is in the details. It’s ironic – this mother of all clichés ‘is it friendship or love’ story would have made me cringe big time, in the hands of any other director. But, Abbas’ script is honest, trendy and loaded with such skillful wit that it actually becomes endearing!
