Classically mild seems to have Sonu trying his best to wipe that boredom in playback singing he’s always been ranting about. Jagjit Singh’s former violinist Deepak Pandit supports this unconventional effort beautifully with a vibrant, eclectic selection of tunes ably propped by thoroughly enjoyable arrangements including buoyant rhythms, jazz, hindustani and a dash of carnatic. Sochta hoon main, Suratiya, Chalki chalki and Dhanya dhanya are sheer delights, musically; and lyrically (Ajay Jhingran), particularly Dhanya Dhanya. Sonu’s vocal mastery is at full display in the jazz-tinged Soona soona. Bravo Sonu and Deepak – this is a fantastic direction for the much-maligned Indi-pop!
