Milliblog Weeklies – India’s only multilingual, weekly, new music playlist.
Week 259: YouTube | Spotify
Two weeks of back-to-back Weeklies… after a long time! 🙂
Beggar Waala – Bloody Beggar (Jen Martin) – Tamil: The song carries the same energy and vibe of Jen Martin’s banger of a song from the earlier Kavin-starrer, Dada – ‘Namma Thamizh Folku’. Instantly and relentlessly catchy!
Miss Oruthi – Once More (Hesham Abdul Wahab) – Tamil: Hesham’s Tamil debut, though the song screams ‘Harris Jayaraj’ for multiple reasons! If I heard it casually, I’d assume it to be some Harris song from the early 2000s that I had missed (no chance of that, though 🙂 ). But Hesham adds some interesting nuances that made sit up. That ‘KaNNaala Kandava’ detour was a stupendous surprise! And the way that segment changes the pace of the song is even more interesting.
Two more things:
- I keep mixing up this film, ‘Once More’, and ‘Nesippaya’ probably because of Aditi Shankar, and keep expecting Akash Murali in the former and Arjun Das in the latter 🙂
- I have a feeling that the Harris Jayaraj feel is entirely intentional. The teaser foreshadowed that as a response from Arjun for a question by Aditi which went, ‘A R Rahman pudikkuma, Ilayaraja pudikkuma?’ 🙂
Nee Enna Paathiye – Miss You (Ghibran) – Tamil: The return of the yesteryear Ghibran! 🙂 But the rhythm that he introduces at 0:38 is present-day Ghibran, and both versions blend beautifully. A special mention to Mohan Rajan’s lyrics – the number of variations of ‘paarthen’, ‘paakura’, ‘paatha’ (and so on) he uses, all in complete context, is very imaginative!
Title song – Kadhale Kadhale (Vishal Chandrasekhar) – Tamil: Vishal’s melody reminded me mildly of Rahman’s Pachai Nirame – perhaps a Kharaharapriya connection? Thirucherai Karthik’s solo violin and Kapil Kapilan’s singing adorn the song mighty well.
Adiye Alangaari – Thandakaaranyam (Justin Prabhakaran) – Tamil: The Justin trademark shines through, easily! The song seems standard-issue in terms of tune and situation, but the small nuances Justin adds goes a long way in making it listenable. The singing too, particularly, Krishnaraj’s (along with Ananya Bhat), adds to the charm.
Naa Favourite Naa Pellam – Janaka Ayithe Ganaka (Vijai Bulganin) – Telugu: The film’s soundtrack, overall, was a surprisingly good listen. This song is my favorite given the musical range Vijai showcases in a single song. Observe the way he lands the ‘PuNyamedho’ phrase (that leads to the Naa Favourite Naa Pellam line), at the end of the pallavi, and again, at the end of the anupallavi. The first interlude, led by Lalit Talluri’s flute, is a delightful throwback to Ilayaraja.
Nin Mizhiyil – Oshana (Mejo Joseph) – Malayalam: The second ‘Pachai Nirame’ recall this week! K.S Harishankar can rarely go wrong with a gorgeous melody like this and Mejo hits it out of the park with the interludes and the melody for the anupallavi!
Parichayavade – Bagheera (B. Ajaneesh Loknath) – Kannada: A dreamy, relaxing romantic ballad in true Ajaneesh style! The way he lands the ‘Parichayavade’ hook after an extended prelude is excellent. Ritesh G Rao’s voice sounds fresh.
Rangeeni – Amit Trivedi (Hindi/Indipop): Typically Amit Trivedi sound, but one that seems to have mellowed considerably. The rhythm takes an especially languorous pace that is alluring and goes beautifully with the lilting melody. Expectedly good singing by Jubin Nautiyal and Hansika Pareek.
Aa Gale Lag Jaa – Sid Paul, ft. Shilpa Rao, Laqshay Kapoor (Hindi/Indipop): Sid Paul’s composition reminded me of Pritam’s, for some reason. But Shilpa Rao’s singing is always a great listen and she does a phenomenal job here as well, with this lush and soft melody that sits on top of the energetic background music.
Tu Hai Kya – Akshath Acharya (Hindi/Indipop): I recall hearing Nadaaniyan by Akshath back in June and was in two minds about adding it in an episode of Milliblog Weeklies – it was good, but I didn’t find it good enough (despite the 97 million views—currently—on its YouTube video). But Akshath’s new song is good enough for a Weeklies episode. The sound is fresh, breezy, and the singing is on the dot.
Bora Bora – AP Dhillon ft. Ayra Starr (Punjabi/English): AP Dhillon’s usually captivating and laid-back musical style infused with Afropop! It’s a heady mix and effortlessly foot-tapping!
Taambdi Chaamdi – Kratex, Shreyas (Marathi/Indipop): This is an insanely addictive Marathi rap EDM song that I had to watch the hilarious music video more than once and enjoy the song too at the same time 🙂 Prior to this song, the ‘Lakalakalaka’ phrase was, in my mind, connected to Rajnikanth (Chandramukhi). But now, I have forgotten that reference entirely!
Bordoisila – Maati Season 1 (Anand Bhaskar) – Assamese/Indipop: The 3rd song from Maati, and I’m glad to see that the standards set by Bawla and Style (in 2 different languages) have been retained in this Assamese song too! Very Coke Studio’ish, of course, but a lovely listen nonetheless. Abhishruti Bezbaruah’s singing is fantastic, as is the backing vocals group.
