TE3N (Music review), Hindi – Clinton Cerejo

Haq hai, with its somber and deeply rich backgrounds plays out like a wonderfully desi’fied Praying For Time (George Michael – Listen Without Prejudice Vol.1, 1990). Clinton handles the vocals perfectly, while he’s superbly supported by the chorus. Rootha is a brilliant concoction! What is essentially a rousing pop tune gets several shades better thanks to the vibrant Bengali folk percussion, and the vocal combo of Benny Dayal and Divya Kumar! To top it all, Bianca Gomes makes a grand entry amidst wailing shankh, stylishly rendering the much-loved traditional Bengali boat song, Sujan Majhi Re! Grahan‘s electronic vibe is pulsating, even as it segues into an equally pulsating rock sound led with full-throated glory by Vishal Dadlani. The soundtrack’s best is Kyun re, that comes in two versions, differentiated by the singer, but united by Amitabh Bhattacharya’s phenomenal lines (“Teri gair maujoodgi mein bhi lage hona tera!”). It’s a heart-wrenching, guitar-driven tune about love and loss, and depending on the singer—Clinton himself, and Amitabh Bachchan—the lines take on beautifully interesting meanings about who it is being sung about! Clinton Cerejo’s debut—Jugni—was a winner too, but in TE3N, his sophomore effort, he pitches in much higher and produces an even more superlative soundtrack!
