Rajalekshmi’s haunting vocals gel beautifully with the captivating piano Vidyasagar enables in the Sivaranjani raaga based Doore doore! MG Sreekumar’s other version is a compelling listen too! Koodilla kuyilamma is enthusiastic fun dipping into the frothy, foot-tapping goodness of Karaharapriya! In Madhumati poovirinjuvo, Vidyasagar makes excellent use of violin, but the tune doesn’t cope up as well consistently. The composer’s tune work superbly in Pavizhamundiri, backed by MG Sreekumar and Jyotsna’s vocals and a punchy rhythm. It’s no secret that Vidyasagar produces (and reserves?) his best for Malayalam. With Priyadarshan as director, that was perhaps a foregone conclusion for Geethanjali!

PS: As Ambareesh Varma points out on Milliblog’s Facebook page, Pavizhamundiri is a rehashed and significantly spruced up version of Vidyasagar’s own ‘Maine hawa ke‘, while Koodilla kuyilamma is merely a translated version of ‘Jaana hai tujhko‘, both from Mere Baap Pehle Aap (2008). Here’s my take on that soundtrack – thankfully, my view is consistent 🙂
