Music I Like (Music review), Suchitra & Sai Madhukar

Suchitra, known more for her item’ish numbers in Tamil films, makes a long overdue, fully deserved cross-over to serious music. Familiar and much-loved Bharathiyar songs like Aasai mugam, Nalladhor veenai and Kaakkai chiraginile gain tremendously from Sai Madhukar’s ambient sound and Suchitra’s rich vocals. Suchitra’s singing takes center-stage in songs like Paayum oli and Kannan mananilayai, even as Charukesi rules over Nenjil uramum indri. However, both versions of Vande mataram sound pretentious and don’t seem to gel with the rest of the album. The 2nd instalment of Music I Like, by Sai Madhukar, is as likeable as the earlier one.
