F.A.L.T.U (Music review), Hindi – Sachin-Jigar

Despite the ennui-inducing, very-Atif’ish tune, Le ja tu mujhe is a gorgeous listen, complete with a delightful sarangi interlude; it uses Atif’s vocals perfectly. Hard Kaur’s Char baj gaye works by being simple and catchy, while Rab sab se sona is every bit Karan Johar’ish and pretty pleasant too! Jigar’s Awaaz reminds one of Rahman’s early Southern material; the soaring hook, and the violin + flute backgrounds, particularly – neat tune, however. Mika’s Fully faltu is typical Mika mantra – repetitive, massy and passable. Gala laga le‘s grand sound is pretty appealing; Vijay Prakash and Priya Panchal offer good vocals here. Jigar’s youthful vocals help the otherwise staid 80s pop sound in Nayee subah, while his other song, O teri, is a hilarious dialog’ish mish-mash, much like Neuman Pinto’s even more funny, Percentage, that not only has a zingy tune but also has dollops of random, enjoyably-silly Tamil utterances! Beh chala does a neat Elvis jig, ably supported by Neeraj Shridhar’s groovy singing, while in Bhoot aaya, the composing duo cleverly mix of Lehmbe Hussainpuri earthy Punjabi and a funky techno hook. F.A.L.T.U’s soundtrack is unabashedly massy and delivers the goods surprisingly well; for a 11-song soundtrack, that’s quite an achievement!

Notes:

1. F.A.L.T.U is perhaps the first Indian soundtrack that has been released entirely online. The purchase process was really smooth (supported by Geodesic’s Mundu player and ecommerce engine).

2. The entire album consisting of 11 songs was just INR 40 – excellent value for money, if you ask me, but despite such an easy way to purchase online and big, bold mentions like, ‘Faltu mein torrents mat dhoondo, music direct download karo’, it’s a pity to see people talking about the soundtrack as a 8-9 song soundtrack…something that the dubious mp3 download websites would have us believe. I suppose there is no competition to the price of zero 🙁

3. There are 2 official websites for F.A.L.T.U, the film (Faltu-thefilm and Iamfaltu) and both do not link to each other. That is completely bizarre. Only the latter has the music download facility.

4. Both the sites desperately need search engine optimization. Try the obvious search strings (F.A.L.T.U songs, for instance!) and you’d notice that the official sites figure nowhere in the results on Google. In fact, the illegal mp3 download sites appear quite prominently in the top 10 search results 🙂
