Kanimozhi (Music review), Tamil – Satish Chakravarthy

Muzhumadhi reuses Rahman’s Mr.Romeo number, Mellisaye’s template rather well, with an Bharadwaj’ish flourish – Vijay Yesudas and Bela Shende are excellent! Penne pogathe‘s hip-hop base is vastly familiar and hence, quite trite, but in a Thaman-style effort, the composer impresses in Thada thada; the combination of minimal, thoughtfully arranged music and a lovely tune is very effective. But the most impressive song of the soundtrack is Yaaro ival ival, that, despite its clichéd lyrics, has a cheerful, rhythmic tune going for it! Composer Satish Chakravarthy’s debut, Leelai, was average. He ups the stake, albeit very mildly, with his second, Kanimozhi.

Note: I have been looking for an alleged original of ‘Mellisaye’ – it is part of the background music in an animated series I recall watching on Doordarshan, years ago. It was called Kozacks or Cojacks – don’t recall the exact name. I recall it as a variant of Asterix/Obelix…similar small.big heroes indulging in a fight against a lot of soldiers. A very prominent background music in it that plays often during each episode is very similar to Rahman’s Mellisaye. Maurice Ravel’s Bolero is also a possible source for all these songs, as I have already mentioned on ItwoFS – No. 4, here.
