Music review: Badra (Indipop – Rupali Dalal, Sanjeev Darshan)

Badra, Kar le singar and Dholana, to some extent, despite the assembly-line rhythm, are three of the most appealing tracks. Humnava’s strong and disparate Middle-eastern influence and the fused Punju folk in Channa mera dil gaya are tedious, however. The massy semi-classical Man kaise lage tests and showcases Rupali’s vocal range beautifully. There’s a strong undercurrent of an ambient sound right across the album that gets tiresome after the initial few tracks. But, perhaps all is not lost for the serial-plagiarizing composers, Sanjeev Darshan – their tunes for Rupali’s album are surprisingly listenable. The debutant singer too proves her versatility!
