While true rock continues to evade success from Indian bands, the early 90s Agni drops its ego, adds two e’s and Sony BMG as their new record label! The selection here is pretty decent – Kabir’s angst-loaded Sadho re, the gruff metal plus folk’ish tune in Ujale baaz and the MTV Roadies theme being the pick of the lot. The jazz infused guitar in Kuch ankahee is another neat touch. But, the rock idiom is simply not Indian, unless its sugar-coated with all the familiar ingredients – as Euphoria’s Palash Sen says, ‘Rock is not us’! I tend to agree.
