Monsoon Mangoes (Music review), Malayalam – Jakes Bejoy
The title song has a nice retro funk coolth, with catchy horns, and is well sung by Rakesh Kishore, Jakes and Udith. There’s more of the captivating funk in Rosie – again, very 80s funk, and Shreya Ghoshal handles it mighty well. Asha goes one step further and replicates the O P Nayyar style exactly, but with middling results without the film’s scenes or context. Naadinu is authentic Malayali Christian gospel, with nothing more to offer, while Beethe din, despite Abhishek and Mame Khan’s spirited singing, is standard-issue ghazal pathos. There’s none of the trailer’s Wes Anderson’y goodness in Monsoon Mangoes’ soundtrack.
