Settai (Music review), Tamil – Thaman S

It’s hard to believe that Agalaadhe and Poyum poyum are from Thaman! With their minimal orchestration, lilting tune modulations and gibberish chorus, they sound almost like Harris Jayaraj’s. Edhathaan kanduttey is trademark Thaman techno-kuthu; superbly written and sung by Gana Bala. Laila laila is annoyingly outdated, but Arjuna arjuna stands out with its exclusive focus on the tune, as the shehnai and marginal rhythm support the tantalizing tune sung brilliantly by Suchitra and Karthik! Settai theme is a watered version of Bhaag DK Bose – hurried and pointless. Settai’s music is hardly like its ingenious original, but it’s likeable nonetheless.
