Man lafanga, Dhatad tatad & Nain parindey – Lafangey Parindey (Hindi – R.Anandh)
One of my favorite soundtracks in Hindi, in recent times, amidst all that Amit Trivedi attack, in the form of Udaan and Aisha. I’m really glad that Anandh has finally made it to Hindi after having proven himself in Tamil (well, to minimal extent, as part of a trio) and countless ads. Man lafanga and Nain parindey have that Vishal Bharadwaj’ish touch to them while Dhatad tadad is a stupendously enthusiastic celebratory number!
Kaadhal anukkal – Endhiran (Tamil – A R Rahman)
The song that worked brilliantly for me, from the most eagerly awaited and hyped soundtrack of the year. The tune is typical Rahman and takes on unpredictable phrases at every turn, making it irresistible! The constantly accompanying guitar makes it breezy and very pleasant.
Akheer – Juggy D (Juggy D’s self-titled debut album)
This is a very old song that I had recommended to some friends on Twitter earlier today. The song is based on the carnatic raga, Hamsadhwani and is a brilliant composition. I have never seen its video till this evening when I searched for it online – have always enjoyed only its audio version! Here’s the video…enjoy!
OST of She’s Out Of My League
This is a film I saw recently and enjoyed immensely too. Besides the film’s hilarious plot and believable characters, something else that stayed on in my mind is the kind of songs that were peppered all through it. It has 20+ songs listed on IMDb, but here’s a list of songs that I really loved, almost as soon as I heard them first in the film! I find this kind of music discovery absolutely amazing – from a film’s soundtrack – by the way!
Wannamama – Pop Levi
Doin’ my thing – King Juju
Say what you want – The Deekompressors
Many the miles – Sara Bareilles
She’s so high – Tal Bachman
Kiss on my list – Hall & Oates
Yeduraiyeh – Happy Happyga (Telugu – Manisharma)
I love Manisharma for what he is – a wildly unpredictable masala tune churner. Some of his soundtracks, like Don Cheenu, are unbearable entirely, but, quite unexpectedly, a few others, like Happy Happyga offer the perfect blend of the frivolous and catchy! Yeduraiyeh is a quintessential Mani song – simple tune, but glitzy packaging!
Muzhumadhi – Kanimozhi (Tamil – Satish Chakravarthy)
It is no doubt very, very similar to Rahman’s Mr Romeo number, Mellisaye, but has been beautifully orchestrated with minimal sounds by Satish Chakravarthy. Great listen!
Meethi baatein teri – Bandish (Indipop – Bandish)
Only 2 songs worked for me in Bandish’s new album – this one and I believe. This one, in particular, with its early Indipop style is a neat listen.
Kiya yehi piyar hai & To woh nahin – Kiya Yehi Piyar Hai (Pakistani Pop – Annie Khalid)
Annie could well be the female, Pakistani version of Justin Bieber, though Bieber, to be fair, has better vocal skills. But in terms of packaging, both seem similar – it outdoes their inherent talents. Annie, on her part, has some fabulous tunes in her new album, though. These 2 songs are ambient, deep and very listenable.
Des mera & Zindagi se – Peepli Live (Hindi – Indian Ocean)
While Des mera is a older number from Indian Ocean’s earlier album, Zindagi se is a particularly brilliant song, thanks to its fabulous lyrics.
Amma thale, Maaralente & Maham maye – Komaram Puli (Telugu – A R Rahman)
An out and out commercial soundtrack by Rahman that is thoroughly enjoyable. The way some of the phrases are constructed in the songs are absolutely mind blowing. Take Amma thale, for example. The free flowing part from 2:50, to almost 3:10 is stuff only Rahman can cook up…particularly that ‘Na na na na…’ portion…I wonder how he even thought of such a way to end that and take on a pitch change after that!
Suno Aisha, Gal mithi mithi, Sham, Lehrein & By The Way – Aisha (Hindi – Amit Trivedi)
I have already written a LOT about Amit Trivedi and Aisha…so nothing more left to say!
Telugammai – Maryada Ramanna (Telugu – MM Keeravani)
As I had shared on Twitter sometime back, I was thoroughly enjoying this song one morning on my way to office. It was a cool, breezy morning in Bangalore (as always!) and I had my windows rolled down. I was on a traffic signal when this song was playing and I heard a knock on my left window. It was a biker and he asked me something in Telugu, pointing to the car audio system. I politely apologized to him and said I don’t understand Telugu. He gave a totally bizarre look and I don’t blame him! This is a fantastic song with such beautiful nativity!
Modala todala & Ee pari tavaka – Gubbi (Kannada – AP Arjun)
Arjun is one Kannada composer that I am watching very closely. I’m happy there’s someone like him breaking new ground in Kannada. Ee pari tavaka has some interludes that remind me of early Rahman and that it itself is a wonderful sign!
Kodi kanavu & Inidhu inidhu – Inidhu Inidhu (Tamil – Mickey J Meyer)
Mickey in Tamil. These 2 songs are very familiar to Telugu and Milliblog’s audiences anyway…but for Tamil listeners, Mickey is a welcome addition and I’m sure he’ll be enjoyed in this state too!
Veyyil Mazhai – Ranam Sugam (Tamil Pop – Paadhai)
Ranam Sugam is an interesting experiment in Tamil pop, that non-starter of a category. It could well be better promoted and songs like Veyyil mazhai could surely grow if only people come to know it exists!
Iragai pole & Vaa vaa – Naan Mahan Alla (Tamil – Yuvan Shankar Raja)
Iragai pole is completely expected from Yuvan, though it is perhaps getting a bit too repetitive as his style. Vaa vaa, on the other hand is such a simple, gorgeous song with a super catchy hook that Yuvan uses for great effect!
