Music review: Connections (A.R.Rahman)

Karthik/ Rahman and Raqeeb Aalam enthusiastically deliver Jiya se jiya – but the song itself is a bit of a letdown – too dense in the backgrounds as it progresses. In Kural, the Thirukkural verses that Blaze (in English) and that uncredited lady render don’t gel in the ambient set-up. Man chandre is perhaps the best of the soundtrack, Sukhwinder and another uncredited lady voice pitching in with an expertly arranged, heartfelt Punjabi track. Of the instrumentals, Himalaya, Mosquito and the jazz-tinged Mylapore Blues are particularly imaginative. Shorn of commercial pressures, the album sounds experimental and explains the unconventional distribution.
