If I were to name the most impressive recent Hindi film composer, it has to be Mithoon. Son of the perennially-sidelined veteran composer Naresh Sharma, Mithoon’s (limited) compositions in Bas Ek Pal, Anwar & Atif’s Kuch is tarah seem out of place in the very commercial and item’ised Bollywood. His limited (original*) repertoire is largely moody and extraordinarily tuneful, though we’re yet to hear anything peppy – not that I’m complaining! With his first solo film (The Train, allegedly a (f)re(e)make of Mikael Håfström’s Derailed) just round the corner, here’s hoping he doesn’t disappoint us and join the Bollywood claptrap.
Keywords: Mithoon Sharma, Mithun Sharma, Bas Ek Pal, Anwar, Atif Aslam
* Not including his recreations here. Mithoon started by recreating Woh Lamhe (Zeher) and Aadat (Kalyug), and that’s how he got to meet Atif Aslam too!
