Rockstar (Music review), Malayalam – Prashant Pillai, M.Jayachandran & Ranjith Meleppat

Veteran Jayachandran sounds oddly patchy in Arikil ninnarikil, though Prashant’s possibly Nilambari raaga-based tune, and the serene orchestration is gorgeous. Paalnila is decidedly Malayali-dandiya and is catchy enough, thanks to Harish Sivaramakrishnan and Nithya’s vocals. Wasabi (Kahlua) is heady techno-dance done in typical Prashant style, mixing Hindi, Malayalam and a lot more. Varikallo‘s pulsating fusion sound is akin to Thaikkudam Bridge’s music (hero Siddharth Menon’s band) and is a lot of fun, while Puthiya puthiya‘s Bollywoodized lilt is easy-on-the-ears. M.Jayachandran’s Onnaman thinkalil has a soulful native sound, but Ranjith Meleppatt’s Bhoologam is wannabe anthemic rock. Prashant makes this Rockstar shine.
