Piya Basanti…Again (Music review), Indipop – Sandesh Shandilya

Sehra sehra is a wonderful re-introduction to the trio that created magic back in 2001 – Ustad Sultan Khan, Chitra and Sandesh Shandilya. Mehboob joins them this time, for the lyrics. The sound of the song is very Indipop’ish along with the trademark saarangi fusion. The much-attempted Kesariya gets a solo in Ustad’s spectacular voice and saarangi; fabulously produced, with imaginative sax layer. Chand hain is the compelling pick of the album – incredibly pleasant tune with a conversational vocal pattern between the two singers and gorgeous lyrics by Mehboob, invoking the moon. That hint of a retro-style in the song… delightful! Tore naina is yet another mélange of Ustad’s solo vocals, sax and guitar, leading to whispery jazz in the background – mesmerizing! Kab avoge plays within raag Bhairavi and it’s only your familiarity with the raag that pulls it down, very mildly. Gori tune and Dil ka tu are highly unlike the album’s overall sound, but Sandesh extracts superb singing from his two stars and offers an interesting experience as the songs progress. The In The Lounge remix of Piya Basanti by DJ Rishabh is entirely unnecessary. Befitting and marvelous follow-up to the original classic, by the trio!
