The documentary film I shot for, late last year, is going to be premiered in Delhi next week. Here’s the synopsis. Is piracy organized crime or class struggle? Are alternative artists who want to hold rights over their art and go it alone in the market, visionaries or nutcases? Is the fine line between plagiarism […]

When Ehsaan enquired if I was in town on February 3rd, late last week, I had no idea about the unplugged gig they were planning in town. I was indeed in town, things happened quite fast and I got an invite for the Shankar Ehsaan Loy Unplugged gig at The Leela, courtesy Standard Chartered Private […]

If I may be allowed to say this again (beyond my couple of tweets)…yes, I purchased Sona Mohapatra’s Ram Sampath-composed song, ‘Paas Aao na’. For INR 10 (great deal, if you ask me!), on ArtistAloud (has a short sample too!). The website’s payment gateway was a royal pain and for something priced 10 bucks, the […]

Using music as an incentive, for children!

Last evening, I was trying to get my 7 year old son for his evening bath. Like most 7 year olds, his priorities were elsewhere – on his Nerf gun…on the paper planes he has made…basically on everything else besides a bawling dad who wants him for a bath. Most parents have options in such […]

I was very surprised when I got that mail…and subsequently, a call – from one of the leading music composers down South (no names – I got permission from him to quote our conversation and assured him that I will not reveal his identity!). He was reasonably offended that his songs did not top the […]

Nokia Ovi Music Shorties – shortchanging composers?

I noticed a news item about Nokia Ovi Music’s new ‘invention’ – 90 second version of songs! It is called ‘Shorties‘! When iTunes is considering increasing the preview duration from 30 seconds to 90 seconds, here we have Nokia Ovi selling edited, 90 second versions of longer songs! When I tweeted about it, many responses […]

This is the print ad (in Dinakaran – Tamil daily – dated, October 1, 2010) for Ram Gopal Varma’s Ratha Sarithram (Tamil version of the Hindi film starring Surya and Vivek Oberoi). And it is plain disgusting – it says, ‘Music available now’ and has, in fine print, just the name of the guy scoring […]

Coke Studio in India? A wish-list!

Supriya Nair’s piece on Coke Studio, in OPEN magazine is l-o-n-g overdue! While it explains beautifully about what makes the show and its music unique, what it leaves is for me to opine and ponder. Here goes! If we (as Indians) are left wondering about the future of non-film music in India, I see the […]

The Return of The CommonWealth Games Theme song!

Nice return, that is. The last time I was complaining and asking if Rahman was given a brief. It looks like the entire country (VK Malhotra, Aadesh Shrivastava and mainstream Indian media, in particular) has given the brief, in the form of feedback, based on the draft version released earlier!
