Milliblog Weeklies – FEB10.2019

Posted by Karthik

Milliblog Weeklies – India’s only multilingual, weekly new music playlist. Week 59: On JioSaavn | On YouTube
11 songs this week. JioSaavn has all the songs – yippee! YouTube is missing just 2 – Yelamala, from Kazhugu 2 and So Bad, by Emarosa.

A note on the songs in the playlist:

Megathoodham – Airaa (Sundaramurthy KS) – Tamil: Singer Padmapriya Raghavan is absolutely fantastic in this highly tuneful song by Sundaramurthy KS. The musical style reminded me of Ghibran’s style and the tune is possibly set to Gowri Manohari raaga, though I’m not sure. It’s a lovely haunting melody for sure!

Asamanjakari & Yelamala – Kazhugu 2 (Yuvan Shankar Raja) – Tamil: The first song from Kazhugu 2 (Sakalakalavalli) was merely a raucous item song, but Yuvan picks up pace with the 2nd single by literally dropping the pace 🙂 The incredibly slow and sedate rhythm of the song is the first and easy appeal. Then there’s Syed Suban’s involved vocals, that goes slightly awry only in places. But his voice goes perfectly with the gently rocking melody. The other song, if I discount Yuvan-sung Adi Yenda Pulla for being too familiar to this overall repertoire, is M.M.Manasi-sung Yelamala, that sounds like a 2.0 variant of an otherwise standard-issue heroine-introduction song. The song’s sparse and focused orchestration, and the extended verses, makes it particularly alluring.

Thimiru Kaattaadha Di – LKG (Leon James) – Tamil: That first interlude is so, so, very early Rahman! The tune is lively and breezy, with interesting lyrics by Vignesh ShivN that makes it seem almost like he is singing all this to Nayanthara. Sathyaprakash carries it all so confidently.

Chinuke – Malli Malli Chusa (Shravan Bharadwaj) – Telugu: What’s with Shravan Bharadwaj and ‘Malli’? After 2017’s MalliRaava, here’s Malli Malli Chusa! The song’s ghatam-layered sound and Sai Charan’s vocals lift the song significantly, as does the song’s rhythmic (with the ‘Thakadhimi Thakajunu’) backdrop! The nadaswaram-style closing is intriguing since it sounds more Middle Eastern in sound!

Etho Mazhayil – Vijay Superum Pournamiyum (Prince George) – Malayalam: In the first half of Prince George’s tune, it’s a nice contrast between Shweta Mohan’s serene and mellow opener and Vijay Yesudas’ exuberant ‘Pakalukal Theerathe’ line! The anupallavi carries the opening serenity, mixes in a lovely tabla-based segue and then goes back to ‘Pakalukal Theerathe’ beautifully!

Neene Modalu Neene Kone – Kiss (Adi Hari) – Kannada: V.Harikrishna’s son makes his debut! The song, sung fantastically—as usual—by Shreya Ghoshal, is trademark Harikrishna melody, with the strings and the anupallavi, reminding one of Raja’s melodies. A chip off the old block!

Ondanondu Kaaladinda – I Love You (Aria Dakshin) – Kannada: I’m guessing this is Aria’s debut given there’s nothing else from him online. The song is a cool 80s style disco/retro that checks all the right boxes and is wonderful. Suchith Suresh breezes through the groovy song!

So Bad, Givin’ Up & Cautious – Peach Club (Emarosa): For a band that was, till their last album (131, from 2016) known for their post-hardcore and alternative rock music, Peach Club is a massive departure in sound! The sound this time is decidedly more pop, and retro pop, at that! So Bad and Cautious take their Michael Jackson’ish sound that they merely explored tentatively in a song like Helpless, in 131. That synth in Cautious, in particular, takes you straight back to Jackson of the 80s! And Givin’ Up is straight out of the 80s soundscape!
