Vaanavil Vaazhkai (Music review), Tamil – James Vasanthan
James Vasanthan’s Vaanavil Vaazhkai is unique – a Tamil Glee of sorts. But unique isn’t necessarily interesting since much of the music sounds mighty force-fitted uncomfortably on the dramatically divergent genre with no genuine connect. The only two songs that stand out include, Senthamizh naadenum and Tamizhukkum amudhendru that recreate older Tamil verses with completely non-Tamil forms of music, in a purposeful way. The rest – 13 more songs!! – is an often embarassing, mostly amatuerish and garish melange of middling rock, bubblegum pop and maudlin ballads. Some marks to James for trying, but there’s little originality here to laud.
