Cuckoo (Music review), Tamil – Santhosh Narayanan

Posted by Karthik

Manasula soora kaathey is exquisite! Whether it is RR and Divya Ramani’s beautiful vocals, or that mesmerising Keeravani-base tune that sounds like Ilayaraja’s beautiful melody from the 80s… or that magically soft orchestration… astoundingly beautiful! Agasatha, with its persistent violin base, is very Santhosh, in outlook, but the tune is involving enough. Such is the impact of Vaikom Vijaylakshmi’s vocals in Kodayila, that while seeming like a free-flowing and out-of-grasp tune, the song comes alive solely because of her. Potta pulla is simple and earnest – a heartfelt Sindhu Bhairavi’ish tune wonderfully articulated by RR with his singing and Yugabharathi even invoking the impact Ilayaraja’s music and Kannadasan’s lyrics in the verses! Kalyanamam kalyanam is an unusual package – the tune and theme is in sharp contrast to the oddly broken rhythm that almost sounds like a devotional song’s! Antony Dasan nevertheless is in super form, as always, here! Enda mapla seems like a conventional Gana Bala song with its Chandrababu’ish ambitions, but Santhosh loads that completely contrasting and absorbing backgrounds including a mind-boggling jazzy piano that the song attains an all new shade! With Cuckoo, Santhosh soars far beyond his familiar style and produces a cracker of a soundtrack!
