Pattam Pole (Music review), Malayalam – M.Jayachandran

Posted by Karthik

Antha naalil is a pleasant surprise, given that it is completely in Tamil! That it is also constructed as sparsely and beautifully as Indira’s Nila kaaigiradhu works strongly in its favor! Hey vennila is boy-band pop material, but its perky and likeable. Kannil kanniloru gets things back into the groove with a fabulously groovy tune, sung with verve by Vijay Prakash as the lead vocalist, and some interesting second’ing by Shakthisree Suchitra! Haricharan is very good in Mazhaye thoomazhaye‘s rendition, but the tune has a mildly coarse college band sound. Two standout songs in a 4-song album is a good deal!

The ‘Pallavi’ Antha Naalil is lifted from Mohan Sithara’s ‘Kannan Aayal Radha Venam’ from the 2003 movie, Pattanathil Sundaram.

One, you’ve linked the wrong song. Here is ‘Kannan Aayal Radha Venam’: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fh-yWXlNfZg

Two, ‘lifted’ is a very odd word to use, in this context. Both appear to be using the same raaga. I don’t know which raaga it is, but once we do find that out, you’d find at least 10 more songs (if not more!) that you can claim Jayachandran has ‘lifted’ from, to create Antha naalil 🙂

I did ponder about a possible raaga similarity.. But considering Jayachandran’s repertoire ( esp. many plagiarized songs in the past); I had no second thoughts about calling it a ‘lift’.

But yes, it is a soothing listen.

Maybe one of the few youthful album from MJ!!! Haricharan’s malayalam diction has improved by miles!!! Kudos to him for tat!!!

Antha Naallil is sung by Madhu Balakrishnan and Harini while Kannil Kannilonnu is sung by Vijay Prakash and Suchitra. Shakthisree has only sung Hey Vennila. The songs are now available on iTunes. https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/pattam-pole-original-motion/id722670224
