Suriya Nagaram (Music review), Tamil – Fen Viallee

Posted by Karthik

Unnai pirivena starts off normally, but as the tabla-based accompaniments kick-in, the tune gets interestingly unpredictable. Violins replace tabla in Selladhae jeevane, but the tune goes uneasily haywire unlike the earlier song. Manmadha kadhal and Kalyaanamaam are the most conventional songs in this soundtrack and are engaging with inventive arrangements; particularly the nadaswaram-based latter. The soundtrack’s highlight is also one of the trippiest songs I have heard in Tamil cinema recently – Chinmayi’s (and an uncredited male voice) Kichu kichu – this one throws a googly at every stanza! Not everything debutant Fen Viallee conjures work, but full marks for trying!
