Music review: Peraanmai (Tamil – Vidyasagar)

Barring the penultimate folk intrusion, Madhu Balakrishnan’s Kaadu kalai katta expresses its fury rather uni-dimensionally. Kaattu puli is reminiscent of Ilayaraja’s songs in the filmy tribal music genre and is a good, catchy listen. Thuppakki penne is loaded with some zingy orchestration, but the tune is disappointing, almost exactly like When the boys, where Sonia Irabor and Sianed Jones shriek through the attitude-loaded, but completely pointless music. Finally, and thankfully, Vidyasagar gets Sadhana Sargam to croon, Yeratthaaza yezhu mani, a dew fresh, serene melody punctuated by scintillating guitar interludes. Peraanmai’s soundtrack sees composer Vidyasagar struggling, out of his comfort zone.
